Department of Health and Human Services is a Behemoth--a Giant Task for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr
Medical contributor, Dr. Peter McCulloughâ„¢ told John Frederick on Outside the Beltway, that the Department of Health and Human Services, is a very large agency and a huge administrative challenge to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, who has no large agency or corporate leadership experience. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has 13 main operating divisions, also called sub agencies. Ten of these are public health service agencies, while three are human services agencies.
Public health service agencies
Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H): Works on biomedical and health breakthroughs.
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Produces research to improve healthcare quality and safety.
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR): Prevents exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Protects public health by controlling the spread of disease and injury.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Protects public health by ensuring the safety and security of food, drugs, and medical devices.
Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Provides health care to geographically isolated and economically or medically vulnerable communities.
Indian Health Service (IHS): Provides federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
National Institutes of Health (NIH): The nation's medical research agency.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation.
Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR): Provides federal support during public health emergencies and disasters.
Human services agencies
Administration for Children and Families (ACF): Promotes the economic and social well-being of families, children, and communities.
Administration for Community Living (ACL): Promotes the well-being of older adults and people with disabilities.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS): Manages the Medicare, Medicaid, and Children's Health Insurance programs.
Other divisions
In addition to the 13 main operating divisions, HHS also includes numerous staff divisions that support the Secretary of HHS, such as the Office for Civil Rights and the Office of Inspector General.
