Clues to the Past - from Geology

How can we use the clues from geology to rewind the history of landscapes, such as the Grand Canyon? The landscape is shaped by the processes of erosion and deposition. By examining the patterns of erosion and deposition we can not only trace the current processes, we can also identify clues to the past.

The erosion and deposition that we see today could not have formed these landscapes, something must have changed. Time is not enough! When we look at the landscapes of the Grand Canyon for example, we need to re-examine the landscape through the understanding that the order of magnitude of events is more significant than the duration of the event. Thinking in terms of time, if we add an infinite amount of time, the day to day actions of nature would never get us to this pattern that we see.
