BAKER: “Please states across the U.S. to look up or do is to tax wealthy residents a response to Trump some big beautiful tax legislation. Democrats ate plans to boost rates on high income orders and luxury houses would help offset expected losses they are going to see and federal funding. In Rhode Island they are calling it the Taylor Swift tax a new levy on vacation homes are valued at $1 million or more would hit the pop star and the mansion she owns their beginning next summer. Will it pay off or drive the rich away? We are back with our panel. Kim, let me start with you. Taylor Swift, she might say look what you made me do if she decides to up sticks and leave Rhode Island. How is this going to work is in a plausible plan these Democratic states have?”

STRASSEL: “Welcome it is a plan. The amusing thing is they are trying to suggest they are doing this in part as a response to the Republican tax bill that just passed they need to even the playing field because it was too nice to rich people et cetera. The problem is obviously chronic over spending. The issue is Taylor Swift is one thing this is obviously a vacation home. She could have homes all over the place and she probably may well choose to be in a place other than Rhode Island. But what is interesting the effort changing definition of the rich. If you look at for instance this is being dumped on other states you’ve got marilyn just got a new tax in place is going after people who make more than $500,000 a year. Connecticut is evaluating a similar plan when you start reaching and that you are in the realms of upper middle class especially in these very expensive places to live and a lot of those people have families. They look around for schools, not much for getting back lookin state services and those are the folks we were just talking about they’re going to up sticks and end up in Texas or Florida or Georgia or someplace that is not going to penalize them simply for existing.”
