Stewartstown, PA - The Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to assist with the house fire on Aug. 3, where two people were found with gunshots to the head. Those two people were later pronounced dead, while two firefighters, including the one who fell, were hospitalized.
After the fall, the fire chief said the firefighter who fell was transported to York Hospital with no life-threatening or severe injuries. He was reportedly released the same day.
The chief released the following statement, thanking fellow first responders:
While this video is disturbing to watch and this was a very tragic event where two people lost their lives, I feel it is important to share the challenges and ever present dangers our firefighters face while performing their duties.
While attempting to extinguish the fire on the second floor, one of our Shrewsbury Volunteers fell through the second floor onto the first floor. In this older structure (circa 1910), the distance from the first floor to the ceiling of the first floor was 12 feet and 4 inches.
Immediately following the fall, firefighters on the first floor recognized the severity of what had occurred and quickly rendered assistance to get the firefighter out of the building. Our firefighter was removed from the building in approximately 31 seconds.
We want to thank our mutual aid Brothers for their quick action in recognizing AND reacting to the situation. They certainly prevented a bad situation from becoming worse.
After the fall, the Shrewsbury firefighter was transported to York Hospital, and it was determined that there were, miraculously, no life-threatening or severe injuries. He was subsequently released the same day.
After a thorough review, ALL the personal protective equipment (PPE) being worn stayed in place during the fall, which is a testament to the proper use of the PPE. The SCBA was removed from service and returned to the dealer the following day for a thorough inspection and a review of the recorded SCBA data.
While we are grateful this incident did not cause severe injury to our Shrewsbury Volunteer, our hearts remain with the families and friends who lost two loved ones in this incident.
