Brandon Johnson just went on MSNBC to declare he will stand up to Donald Trump and block any attempt to send the National Guard into Chicago. Johnson claims the people of Chicago will stand with him. But Trump says the opposite — that Chicago residents are “screaming for help.” He points to Washington, D.C. as proof, saying that since federal forces stepped in, residents can finally go out to dinner safely and for the first time in years, there were zero murders in a single night.

But here’s the bigger issue: crime data in Chicago can’t even be trusted. For years, the city has failed to fully report to the FBI’s NIBRS system. Murders, assaults, and shootings have gone missing from the national database. Yet city officials keep bragging about “crime being down,” even though their own reporting is incomplete.

This is classic gaslighting. Instead of admitting failure, Chicago’s leadership hides behind broken systems and manipulates the narrative — while everyday people live with carjackings, shootings, and fear.
