The Lord Jesus spoke a phrase that has echoed through centuries: “All who live by the sword shall die by the sword.” Many have misunderstood this to mean that God’s people are never to defend themselves, never to guard their families, never to resist evil in practical ways. But when we read carefully, we find that Jesus was not condemning protection of the weak, but rather the carnal impulse to use violence to block the plan of God or to trust in violence as a way of life. The sword can be either a tool of stewardship or an idol of the flesh, and this is what we must discern in these darkening times.

The difference between murder and defense is clear in Scripture. Murder is the willful shedding of innocent blood, motivated by hatred, pride, or gain. Cain rose up against Abel in jealousy and was judged. Murderers, Revelation tells us, have no part in the Kingdom of God. Yet God also ordained that protecting life is not the same as taking life in hate. In the Law, He gave Israel distinctions about defending their homes, and He repeatedly affirmed that preserving the innocent is an act of love. Deliver those being led away to death, Proverbs says, and hold back those staggering toward slaughter. The Lord hates cowardice as much as He hates bloodlust.
