The Japanese Shinkansen, also known as the bullet train, is a high-speed rail network. The Shinkansen is renowned for its speed, safety, and punctuality, with trains averaging delays of less than a minute. The first line, the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Osaka), opened in 1964, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympics. Since then, the network has expanded to over 2,700 km (1,700 miles) across multiple lines, including the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Joetsu, and Kyushu Shinkansen.
