Key facts about the USS Intrepid:
Nicknames: The ship was known as "The Fighting 'I'" for its prominent role in battle. It also earned the nickname "The Dry I" because it was frequently in dry dock for repairs after sustaining multiple torpedo and kamikaze attacks.
Service history: After World War II, the Intrepid was modernized in the 1950s and served as an anti-submarine carrier. It also played a role in the Vietnam War and served as a recovery ship for NASA space missions.
