Dear Pastor Bob: I have seen a lot of strong opinions relating to gender roles online, by both Christian and non-Christian men. It appears that they feel (most or a lot of them) that only a man should work and make money, and that women are to be at home and taking care of such responsibilities there. That seems very outdated to me. The day and age in which we live makes that impossible. I had to take on the responsibility of head of house, in so many ways due to his health condition, and multiple hospitalizations. Otherwise we’d be out in the street. Isn’t for better or for worse, in sickness and in health vows in which to honor at all times? Meaning if the husband falls ill and can no longer work, that the wife must step up to resume his duties? I do not consider myself a feminist, however I am a strong woman who knows what must be done to survive. Is it biblical for men to think like that? And if God intended for women not to work at all, then why would he have so many men get ill, putting them in a position where they no longer can work? I’d like your feedback on this. Many of us women are tired of the backlash we receive from the extremist types. What do you think about a strong, yet still feminine woman in a marriage? How important is it for the foundation of it, and to help keep it together?
