Enoch has been nominated as a primary candidate since he “walked with God and he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). Moses receives numerous votes as one of the witnesses for several reasons: 1) he performed miraculous signs that parallel the witness of Revelation 11; 2) he was seen on the mount of transfiguration (cf. Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:1-4; Luke 9:28-31); 3) no person buried the body of Moses (Deuteronomy 34:4-7). Next, Elijah has been a popular choice as one of the witnesses due to his miraculous signs and wonders. First, his ability to call fire down from heaven (1 Kings 18:36-38; 2 Kings 1:10-12); Second, Elijah parted the waters (2 Kings 2:8-9). Third, Elijah appears on the mount of Transfiguration with Jesus and Moses (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:1-4; Luke 9:28-31). Fourth, Elijah, like Moses, did not experience death. The prophet was taken in a whirlwind by a “chariot of fire and horses of fire” (2 Kings 2:10-11). These events and other miracles performed during Elijah’s ministry set him apart.
