Hey everyone, it’s Leaflit! Today I’m reacting to Portable Orange’s video “How I Joined (and Left) the Far‑Right,” where he takes us through his political zigzag—starting center‑right, swinging left, then labeling himself far‑right (even though it wasn’t), then switching left again. He points out that most of his shifts were tied to his friend groups—whenever they moved, so did he. But when he finally made a choice on his own—voting for Trump—he lost his friends, hit depression, and then reverted.
Here’s the deal: it’s concerning when someone’s entire worldview is determined by peer pressure. True convictions come from critical thinking, not hoppin’ along with your social circle. But I also want to applaud the moment he did stand up on his own—even though it cost him. That shows integrity. In this reaction, I dig into why it matters to root your beliefs in yourself—and why following the herd can rob you of who you are.
Portable describes shifting from center-right → center → left → right (self-described far‑right)—but admits none of these were deeply examined; they followed whatever his old friend group believed.
He eventually voted for Trump of his own accord, which led to immediate fallout: “everyone left me… I was depressed.” That moment of independent thought ends up costing him dearly—socially and mentally.
Portable’s own phraseology: “I thought for myself and lost everything.” That deserved respect—even if his beliefs weren't fully fleshed out, that kind of independence matters.
Beware social echoes – Politics isn’t a fashion accessory. Constantly switching to fit in cheapens your moral compass.
Independent thinking is rare – Even if you disagree with the choice, the act of choosing for yourself is courageous.
Personal cost of beliefs – Standing alone hurts. That moment deserves empathy, not mockery.
Encourage thoughtful conviction – This reaction champions self-reflection over peer conformity—ask yourself why, not just who.
