Week 31 Tutorial: The Time of the End and The Day of the Lord (Joel; Daniel)

Week 31 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge see us in the prophetic works of Joel and Daniel, the last of the Old Testament books based in the time of the Babylonian Empire and exile.

In this tutorial, Chad Mansbridge provides a brief overview of the Prophet Joel, including his repeated use of the refrain ‘the Day of the Lord’. While Joel is somewhat difficult to date, many believe his predictions describe the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon in 586BC, and so we include him here for that reason.

Which brings us to the Book of Daniel, our fourth and final Major Prophet, whose ministry spans some 70 years and whose prophecies speak to the future of God’s people through to at least 450 years after they were given.

Of note, Daniel lays out clearly the arrival of at least 4 then-future world powers who would hold sway over the people of God: the Medes and Persians, followed by the Greeks, Romans and, ultimately, the Everlasting Kingdom of Yahweh Himself.

The Book of Daniel is best read in two even halves (Chs. 1–6, then 7–12), or, should you prefer to walk it through in chronological order, try reading Chs. 1–4, then 7–8, 5, 9, 6 and finally 10–12.
