Is American public education salvagable? This candidate says yes.

Yesterday I spoke with John Myrick who’s running for governor in the state of Maryland. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with his running mate, Doctor Brenda Thiam. Like Myrick, Thiam has a long history of public service as both a special education teacher and an elected member of the Maryland House of Delegates.

If they make it to the state house in next year’s election, Myrick and Thiam have their work cut out. Maryland is suffering from rampant crime, abysmal public school performance especially in large districts like Baltimore, crushing taxes, and an unfriendly business environment. It’s bad, and the current Governor Wes Moore doesn’t get half the bad press he deserves.

I’m excited to hear what Doctor Thiam has to say. Let’s bring her in.

Dr. Brenda J. Thiam was born and raised in North Carolina and moved to Maryland in 1995. She's a special education teacher for a school district in western Maryland. She has been a special educator for nearly 30 years serving in many capacities. She has a PhD in special education leadership and has devoted her adult life to educating students and adults with disabilities.

Dr. Thiam served in the Maryland General Assembly as a state delegate who represented Hagerstown, district 2B. She was the first Black woman to serve in the legislature in Maryland's history. During her time as state delegate, she was able to secure funding for her district to support various local projects, such as funding for a community center and the senior center. Dr. Thiam serves in several community volunteer roles to include but not limited to; board member with Meritus Medical Center, membership chair for Black Conservative Federation; board member of Brook Lane Health Services, ambassador for Project 21. She's married to her husband Malick, they have one college-age daughter, and two fur babies. Dr. Thiam is the running mate for John Myrick, who is running for governor of Maryland for the 2026 gubernatorial election.
