Posted • August 28, 2025: A 16-year-old Maryvale High School student accused of fatally stabbing another student in a classroom on Aug. 19 has been charged with second-degree murder, according to court documents. Chris Aguilar was given a $500,000 cash-only bond. Phoenix officers responded to the west Phoenix school at about 10:54 a.m. after receiving a call about a stabbing and found a boy with multiple stab wounds, court documents said. The boy was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at noon, court documents said. He was identified by police as Michael Montoya II, 16. Phoenix police and school security detained Aguilar at the school before taking him to Maryvale Hospital to treat a cut on his right hand, court documents said. A school resource officer collected a 4-inch folding knife that had Aguilar’s name etched on the handle and placed it in the principal’s office, court documents said.

Multiple teens told police that Montoya had robbed Aguilar of a firearm, with one saying that Aguilar and his twin brother talked about killing Montoya after the alleged robbery, according to court documents. Two teachers also saw the stabbing, court documents said. They identified Aguilar as the aggressor and said Montoya was unable to defend himself, the documents said.
