Eaters of the Dead: The Manuscript of Ahmad ibn Fadlan, Relating His Experiences with the Northmen in AD 922 (later republished as The 13th Warrior to correspond with the film adaptation of the novel) is a 1976 novel by Michael Crichton, the fourth novel under his own name. The story is about a 10th-century Muslim Arab who travels with a group of Vikings to their settlement.
Historical, based on real life events lost in antiquity. The original came from a Muslim. A witness rather than an author. No an entertainer. He was an ambassador. A tax collector and anthropologist. See introduction and Wikipedia for more information.
Ahmad ibn Fadlan Journeyed on a heroes quest with a group of North men, Viking.
Michael Crichton did good job as a story teller in reverse Viking tradition. Instead of grandstanding he did his best to stick to actual events. he admits that a portion of story is still fiction.
Movie stars the talented Antonio Banderas as Ahmad ibn Fadlan, as well as Diane Venora and Omar Sharif. It was directed by John McTiernan; Crichton directed some uncredited reshoots. The film was produced by McTiernan, Crichton, and Ned Dowd, with Andrew G. Vajna, James Biggam and Ethan Dubrow as executive producers
A good adaptation and follows the book with about a 70% accessory. It was well done and is a compliment to the original. Both the ending of movie vs book are perfect. I highly recommend both . Mainly because they are based on real life events that happened over 1000 Years ago. It has more validity then books like beowulf or the bible. Its context also gives validity to both as reproductions of stories that have been passed down through time. Meaning behind every legend is a grain of truth.
