Dennis McCarthy, a retired Irish sea captain who moved into the town's dilapidated inn following the death of his brother Charles, is met by children Scott, Tippy, Catfish, and their dog Tramp. They quickly become involved in a treasure hunt using hints left by Jean Lafitte, the pirate, that the captain's late brother was unable to decipher. A crotchety former caretaker, an adventurous reporter looking for a story, and an enigmatic figure who follows them about and whom the children attempt to identify are all around them.
