How can we seek forgiveness like the Sahabah did?
I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are beginning Statement No. 9. Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
Today we will be describe, That How can we seek forgiveness like the Sahabah did?
Seeking forgiveness (Tawbah) is one of the greatest acts of worship that brings a believer closer to Allah Almighty. The Qur’an and Hadith give us clear guidance on how to repent sincerely, and the lives of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet (PBUH) provide practical examples of how true believers sought forgiveness. Allah Almighty describes in Surah At-Tawbah verse 118 the repentance of the three companions who were left behind in the expedition of Tabuk—Ka‘b ibn Malik, Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Murarah ibn Rabi‘. They admitted their mistake honestly, bore the hardship of social boycott for fifty days, and turned to Allah with sincerity until He accepted their repentance. This teaches us that seeking forgiveness requires honesty, patience, and unwavering trust in Allah’s mercy. Unlike the hypocrites who lied to escape accountability, these companions chose truthfulness, and Allah praised them in the Qur’an. Right after narrating their story, Allah commands in Surah At-Tawbah verse 119:“O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” Thus, one way to seek forgiveness like the Sahabah is to approach Allah truthfully, without excuses or lies, admitting our sins and relying only on His mercy.
The Sahabah also followed the example of the Prophet (PBUH), who himself sought forgiveness frequently despite being sinless. In Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 6307), the Prophet (PBUH) said: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.” The companions emulated this habit by constantly remembering Allah and asking His pardon. For example, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA) once asked the Prophet (PBUH) to teach him a supplication, and the Prophet (PBUH) taught him to say: *“O Allah, indeed I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me. Surely You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 834). This supplication shows humility, acknowledgment of one’s shortcomings, and reliance on Allah’s mercy—all of which were qualities of the Sahabah in seeking forgiveness.
Another way the Sahabah sought forgiveness was through sincere deeds and good works to erase sins. Allah says in Surah Hud verse 114):“Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.” Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), for instance, used to increase his acts of charity and prayer whenever he felt he had erred, believing in the promise of Allah that good actions wipe away sins. The companions also understood that forgiveness requires not just words but also a change of heart and behavior. True repentance involves regret for the sin, leaving it immediately, and resolving not to return to it again. The Prophet (PBUH) said in **Sunan Ibn Majah (Hadith 4251):“All the children of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent.” The Sahabah lived by this principle, never letting sins drag them into despair but always turning back to Allah with hope.
Importantly, the companions never relied on their status or past sacrifices to assume automatic forgiveness. Even the greatest of them, like Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali (RA), were known for their humility and fear of Allah. They cried in their prayers, begged Allah for pardon, and constantly sought His forgiveness. This teaches us that no matter how much worship we do, we must remain humble and seek forgiveness regularly, for Allah loves those who repent. As Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 222:“Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.” Thus, to seek forgiveness like the Sahabah, we must combine honesty in confession, consistency in seeking pardon, humility in recognizing our weakness, and effort in doing good deeds that wipe away sins.
In summary, the Sahabah’s way of seeking forgiveness was marked by truthfulness, patience, humility, and continuous turning back to Allah. They did not justify their sins but admitted them, endured trials for their mistakes, and trusted in Allah’s mercy. They frequently asked for forgiveness in their prayers, followed the supplications taught by the Prophet (PBUH), and increased their good deeds to cleanse their records. For us today, seeking forgiveness like the Sahabah means being truthful with ourselves, repenting sincerely with regret and resolve, making constant istighfar, and following good deeds with the hope of wiping away our shortcomings. If we adopt these qualities, we too can experience the sweetness of Allah’s pardon, for He is Al-Ghafoor (The Forgiving) and At-Tawwab (The Accepter of Repentance).
We conclude today's discourse with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Bless us in our time, our families, and our faith, and gather us under the shade of Your mercy on the Day of Judgment. Amen
Allah Hafiz
