Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Disturbing reports have emerged from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, detailing alleged human rights abuses and extortion targeting Eritrean refugees by members of the Federal Police.
Recent incidents, as depicted in a widely circulated image, show what appears to be a young Eritrean man being dragged on the ground by his hair by federal police officers. This act has been described as deeply distressing and inhumane.
Sources indicate that federal police, allegedly acting under the direction of the Ethiopian government, have been specifically targeting and arbitrarily arresting Eritrean refugees living in the country. Following these arrests, refugees are reportedly not brought before the law to be judged under immigration regulations. Instead, they are allegedly pressured and extorted to pay exorbitant bribes for their release.
Ethiopia has publicly stated its commitment to the UNHCR framework, presenting itself as a hospitable country for foreign nationals seeking refuge. However, these recent actions are seen as a severe deviation from international agreements and UNHCR protocols, with widespread arrests and harassment of young Eritrean refugees being reported.
