From Baby Food to Liver Crisis – A Teen's Diet Wake-Up Call

This case study is inspired by the rising childhood MASH cases linked to obesity and poor nutrition.

Imagine a 13-year-old boy diagnosed with a liver disease once only seen in older alcoholics.

Meet Alex: Born full-term, bottle-fed as a baby, switched to jarred purees at 6 months, then a typical American diet – cereals, snacks, sodas, fast food loaded with processed sugars, seed oils, and empty carbs.

By age 13, he's overweight and diagnosed with MASH (Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis) and insulin resistance. His liver is inflamed and fatty – all from diet, not alcohol.

In the past, fatty liver was rare in kids – mostly hitting older adults from heavy drinking. But today, thanks to the obesity epidemic and ultra-processed diets, MASH affects 1 in 6 kids with metabolic issues.

It's not just 'fatty liver' – it's inflammation that can lead to scarring, cirrhosis, or worse.

The good news? It's preventable. Ditch processed, seed oils, and junk for whole foods rich in animal protein and fat. Add a few in-season wild berries with the seeds in, and your child's health can turn around.

MASH is rising in kids due to diets high in sugars/fructose and seed oils (e.g., from snacks).
