Texas DPS Chase Man Into Mall Getting Hurt Shoot Up Mall for Possible DUI Driver - Officer Safety
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Newly-obtained dashcam and body camera footage show the fateful moment a Central Texas wrecked a pickup truck into the Killeen mall on December 21, 2024.
Tragedy struck at the Killeen Mall when John Darrel Schultz, 53, of Kempner, Texas, drove his truck into the JC Penny’s during a police chase, injuring multiple people.
It’s now been eight months since that incident, and KWTX has obtained the dash and body camera footage from the DPS Trooper that was pursuing the driver when he drove into the mall.
Footage from DPS Trooper Brody Telfer’s dash cam shows him waiting along I-35 South in Belton, after DPS says they received reports from Temple PD of a reckless driver in a truck.

The truck then comes into view and the pursuit begins, lasting for about 11 minutes. As they exit onto I-14 towards Killeen, the trooper attempts a pit maneuver to stop the driver, but it is unsuccessful.
Then as they reach the Killeen Mall the driver suddenly pulls off the highway. The driver eventually pulls into the mall, driving through the crowded parking lot which is packed with Christmas shoppers.
Things suddenly take a turn for the worse when the driver does something completely unexpected… driving straight through the doors of JC Penny’s.
Body camera footage from Trooper Telfer, who was right behind the truck as everything happened, shows him immediately rushing inside with his gun out.
By the time the trooper reaches the truck, it has already reached the other side of the store, leaving behind it a trail of destruction.
We then see and hear as the trooper starts firing into the truck, whose driver is trying to drive further into the mall. He’s joined by a Killeen police officer, a KISD police officer, and two other off-duty officers with local agencies.

Afterwards we see authorities slowly approaching the truck, which has stopped moving after crashing into an office space, its wheels still moving.
After approaching the truck, officers confirm the suspect is dead, removing him from the truck and then searching it.
The footage ends with Trooper Telfer walking back through the store, showing the extent of the damage and multiple people being treated on the ground for their injuries.
As a reminder, those who were injured in this incident made it out alive and are okay.
DPS Trooper Brody Telfer and the KISD officer received the 2025 Warrior Award from the Texas Municipal Police Association for their actions that night, the highest recognition of valor.
