The 2004 Beslan attack in Chechnya was one of the worst terror attacks in Russia. During the school siege, Chechen militants took over 1,000 hostages, including hundreds of children. The hostage crisis, which unfolded over three days, ended in a massacre that claimed 334 lives, including 186 children.

Survivor Dina Kargiyeva told her story to photographer Dmitri Beliakov, who documented the aftermath of the attack. She was among the hostages, and lost her 11-year-old daughter, Zarina, in the massacre. Years later, Dina found some solace by adopting a daughter, Farisa, as she worked to rebuild her life in the wake of the catastrophe. The Beslan massacre remains a poignant reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict in Chechnya.
