As an elderly person, my observation of presidential politics is that the change came with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1981. Voters became enamored with candidates that would entertain them as well as cling to one that would pander to their prejudices and biases. They cared not if the candidate was competent or qualified, had any history of actual service to people, but wanted glitz, glamour and someone who could talk down on their level. Intelligent, honest and factual information became irrelevant. Economic policies became secondary to bogus, invented social/cultural issues and thus allowed Republicans to advance their agenda to take from the 99% and move over $50 trillion to the top 1% while those same voters applauded because the Republicans would vow to go after some poor people, particularly those black and brown people and certainly those LGBTQ people. The Republicans figured out just how to con voters and it has worked. Now we find ourselves with a fascist, tinpot dictator and a failing economy. Wise up voters. Boring, intelligent, competent politicians are the only ones that can save us and our freedoms and liberties which are fast disappearing.
