Retro and Me Found A Moonshine Still While Looking for Abandoned Houses in the Georgia Mountains!

It's Retro and Me again on another adventure! This time we went back to the area of the abandoned youth camp to look for the houses I stumbled across years ago while hiking in this area and had plenty of laughs along the way! We hiked straight down the road instead of turning off towards the camp which is where I remember the houses being located. This took us beyond a guard rail that had apparently been put up by the Forestry Service to block off the road.

There was no trace of the houses anywhere which means they were most likely demolished when they were vacated. It's the policy of the Forestry Service and other government conservation agencies to demolish vacated structures on their land when they become vacant and return the area to nature. I believe access became a major issue to the residents as there has been an ongoing dispute over the years about who was responsible for maintaining it. The Forestry Service says it's a county road and therefore not their responsibility, and the county says it's a Forest Service road. It would be entirely possible the residents eventually moved due to the condition of the road deteriorating to the point of being difficult to navigate except with a four wheel drive vehicle.

What we did find were the remnants of an old moonshine still that appeared to have been raided and destroyed by law enforcement. I was able to confirm this to have been parts of an old moonshine still through a website that told what to look for to make a determination. This location is deep in the North Georgia mountains, and I have located the remains of other stills in the area.
