Japan made electricity with footsteps
Japan converts footsteps into electricity using piezoelectric tiles.
- These tiles capture the kinetic energy from your steps. When you walk, your weight and motion create pressure on the tiles. The tiles bend slightly, producing mechanical stress. Piezoelectric materials inside the tiles convert this stress into electrical energy. Each step generates a small charge, and millions of steps together produce enough power to run LED lights, digital displays, and sensors. In busy places like Shibuya Station, around 2.4 million footsteps a day contribute to this system. The electricity is stored or used immediately, reducing reliance on traditional power sources and supporting sustainable urban infrastructure. This method turns everyday motion into practical renewable energy.
