Antique Bark Spud in action

Using an 1860s “bark spud” made in central Pennsylvania to remove thick, heavy pine bark before sawing the log into lumber. Got the spud from an antique dealer, and turned a five foot ash stave on the lathe to fit. I use it on old softwoods and hardwoods alike that have thick bark with mud and rocks that will defeat the carbide tipped debarker on the sawmill. Thing of beauty 100% purpose-made by a talented blacksmith long ago for a tan bark industry that died out in the 1920s.
