Dream Big, Work Hard: Lessons from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – The People’s President
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, lovingly known as the Missile Man of India, was one of the most respected scientists and leaders of modern India. Born on October 15, 1931, in a small town called Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he came from a very humble family. His father was a boat owner, and his mother was a homemaker. Life was not easy, but young Kalam had a burning desire to study, learn, and contribute to the nation.
Journey as a Scientist
Dr. Kalam studied aerospace engineering and went on to join the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and later the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He played a key role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III), which successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980. This achievement put India among the nations with space technology.
But his greatest recognition came from his work with missile technology. Under his leadership, India developed the Agni and Prithvi missiles, which made India self-reliant in defense. That is why he was honored with the title Missile Man of India.
Nuclear Tests and National Pride
In 1998, Dr. Kalam was a key figure in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests. These tests gave India nuclear power status and boosted national confidence. The whole world began to see India as a strong and capable nation.
President of India – The People’s President
From 2002 to 2007, Dr. Kalam served as the 11th President of India. He was not just a political leader but a guide and teacher for the youth. People called him the People’s President because of his simplicity, honesty, and closeness to ordinary citizens. He always encouraged young minds to dream big and work hard for the nation.
A Teacher Forever
Even after his presidency, Dr. Kalam chose to teach and interact with students. He strongly believed that the future of the country lies in the hands of the youth. His books, such as “Wings of Fire” and “Ignited Minds”, continue to inspire millions across the world.
Legacy
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture to students. He died doing what he loved most—teaching. His life is a message of hard work, dedication, simplicity, and service to the nation.

👉 Dr. Kalam’s story teaches us that no dream is too big if we have determination, discipline, and a heart full of service. He truly proved that a boy from a small village could rise to become the President of India and inspire the entire world.
