What does it mean for Christians to persevere in the faith, and how should believers think about the trials, tribulations, and struggles that fill our lives? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot sits down with Dr. Richard Caldwell to explore the biblical teaching of Christian perseverance. The conversation unpacks what Scripture says about the perseverance of the saints, how God preserves His people, and how genuine faith endures to the very end.
When we speak about the perseverance of the saints it is to proclaim the glorious truth that the faith God granted us as believers, which is the fruit of regeneration, is unable to be extinguished, because God has granted us a faith that is genuine. It is the biblical truth that true believers will remain and continue in the faith throughout their lifetime, because God Himself is keeping them. Sometimes this doctrine is spoken of as eternal security or with the phrase once saved always saved. But Pastor Caldwell explains that while the phrase may capture something true, it is often misunderstood and even misused. The focus of perseverance is not on a moment in the past when someone prayed a prayer or made a decision, but on the ongoing reality of Christian endurance. Genuine believers continue to walk with Christ, not because of their own strength, but because of the power of God who preserves His people. So, the preservation of the saints explains the perseverance of the saints.
Yet, the Scriptures make it clear that Christians are not promised a life free from hardship. On the contrary, we are told that all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will face persecution. Trials, tribulations, and suffering are part of the Christian life. Yet in these very struggles, we see the reality of perseverance in trials and perseverance in suffering. Believers discover that the faith God has granted is not extinguished by difficulties. Instead, through hardships, doubts, and even seasons of weakness, God upholds His people and proves their faith to be genuine. This is where the doctrine of perseverance through persecution becomes deeply encouraging, showing that even in the hardest circumstances, God preserves believers by His Spirit and His Word.
Dr. Caldwell highlights the difference between a distorted view of eternal security and the biblical understanding of perseverance. Many grew up hearing once saved always saved presented as a guarantee disconnected from any evidence of obedience, repentance, or love for God. But Scripture presents something much richer. Perseverance in faith is always linked to walking with Christ, loving Him, and keeping His commandments. It is not that our endurance saves us, but that our endurance demonstrates that we have truly been saved. The warnings in Scripture against falling away serve to remind us that true assurance is found in continuing to trust Christ to the very end.
Throughout this discussion, Dr. Caldwell takes us to passages like 1 Peter 1 and Romans 8, showing that perseverance, endurance, and assurance are rooted in God’s power. Believers are guarded through faith, kept by the Holy Spirit, and sealed for the day of redemption. This means that while we truly persevere, it is ultimately God who preserves us. The doctrine of perseverance, that comes from the reformed doctrine of soteriology, is not a cold theological formula but a warm and personal truth. It reminds Christians that salvation is God’s work from beginning to end. He grants faith, He sustains faith, and He ensures that His people will endure. This leads to practical encouragement for the Christian life.
