Our Lady of the Rocks in Montenegro..

Our Lady of the Rocks is one of Montenegro’s most enchanting landmarks, located on a tiny artificial island in the Bay of Kotor. According to legend, sailors discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the sea in 1452. Believing it to be a divine sign, locals began sinking stones and scuttled ships at the site, eventually creating the island. On it, they built the beautiful Roman Catholic church that still stands today. Inside, visitors can admire striking 17th-century frescoes, a rich collection of silver votive plaques, and the famed tapestry embroidered with human hair. Every July, the tradition of throwing rocks into the bay continues during the Fašinada festival, honoring its miraculous origins. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, Our Lady of the Rocks is both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural treasure of Montenegro.
