In December 2024, a high-speed chase initiated in Belton after reports of reckless driving culminated in tragedy when 53-year-old John Darrel Schultz of Kempner crashed his pickup truck through the doors of the JCPenney store at Killeen Mall. After refusing to exit the vehicle, Schultz was fatally shot by responding officers, resulting in five injuries among shoppers but no additional deaths.
