"The Signalman" (short story by Charles Dickens) tells the tale of when a railway signalman (Denholm Elliott) tells a curious traveler (Bernard Lloyd) how he is being troubled by a spectre that seems to predict calamity. The story develops slowly but surely, and when the traveler does eventually discover the source of the signalman's anxiety, he tries to help his new friend by providing a rational explanation.
