The condition is that its is just hours, not days since your streak ran out, so it works when you realize some minutes or hours (or almost a day, if you live in Japan or Australia) after midnight that you forgot or were unable to extend the streak by a daily exercise.

Duolingo extends streaks based on the date of your local time. If the day is already over in your local time, make a virtual trip around the world to a place where it still is yesterday. One fail-safe way to do this is to take your phone, get offline and in flight mode, switch off automatic time and date, switch off automatic time zones, choose a time zone that is so much further east (a few times zones further west might also be enough) that it is still yesterday, complete an exercise on Duolingo while offline, reverse the steps and open the Duolingo app once again. You traveled back in time and extended the streak.

You can also compromise on this strict procedure and might still have success, for example by staying online while switching time zones manually.
