Watching Trains Episode 14 - Manned Helpers on Raton

A string of three Santa Fe diesel locomotives are stationed at the Lynn NM Helper Pocket at the top of Raton Pass. The summit of Raton Pass is the Highest Point on the Santa Fe. Whenever a train doesn't have enough power to make the climb the helper string is dispatched to their location.

In this video you will see trains in Jansen Colorado and Raton New Mexico that must be helped over the pass with manned helpers. Then at the top of the pass the helper string is removed and goes back to the Helper Pocket to await its next assignment.

Watch the exciting action as the helper string and the trains motive power go into Run 8 all the way up the steep grades not being able to exceed 12 mph.
