Part 3 of our 4 part series leading up to Constitution Day: September 17.

We could speak of the mighty men of the clergy landing on Plymouth Rock, where the pilgrims made a covenant with God. On the shoulders of those giants is where this story is built. It was a time where bold courages men stood up for Liberty and Justice.

Many historians believe that if it had not been for this Regiment of Pastors speaking out and making a stand we would not have had the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

After a short Intro to Tactical Civics™ this presentation begins in the fiery days 1775, a group of colonial pastors, known as the Black Robe Regiment, stood as bold leaders in the fight for freedom. Named for their black clerical robes, these preachers weren’t just spiritual leaders—they inspired, educated, and mobilized colonists to resist British tyranny. Their sermons and sacrifices helped birth a nation grounded in liberty and faith. Today, as America faces new threats to its founding principles, their legacy calls us to reclaim their courage and conviction.

Patriots in Pulpits
The term “Black Robe Regiment” came from British sympathizer Peter Oliver, who saw these pastors’ influence in sparking rebellion. Across denominations Christians united for morals and liberty. British Prime Minister Horace Wal pole quipped, “Cousin America has run off with a Presbyterian parson.” The British called the Revolution a “Presbyterian Revolt” and burned churches to silence patriot pulpits. These pastors reassured colonists that resisting oppression was God’s will, inspiring farmers and families to join a seemingly hopeless fight. As historian B.F. Morris said in 1864, “No class of men contributed more to our independence than the ministers.”
