Acts 17 - Paul Talks to People

We look at Paul’s mission in Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens, as recorded in Acts 17. We explore how Paul adjusts his approach to share the gospel with different audiences, showcasing his wisdom and resilience in the face of challenges.

Thessalonica: Paul begins by reasoning with the Jewish community from the Old Testament, showing them how the prophecies point to Jesus. Despite initial success, opposition rises, forcing Paul to flee.

Berea: In Berea, Paul encounters a more open-minded group. The people here eagerly examine the scriptures to confirm Paul’s message. Many believe, showing the power of thoughtful dialogue and sincere investigation.

Athens: Arriving in Athens, Paul faces a city full of idols and philosophical thought. Instead of using Jewish scripture, he wisely references the Athenians’ altar to an unknown god. Paul uses this to introduce them to the one true God and speaks of Jesus’ resurrection, sparking both curiosity and skepticism.

Takeaways: Paul’s journey in Acts 17 demonstrates the importance of adapting your message to the audience without compromising its core. His ability to speak to both Jews and Greeks, and to address their differing worldviews, shows the power of effective communication and empathy. This chapter encourages us to understand where people are in their faith journey and find ways to share truth in a manner that resonates with them.
