My old casual shoes, lightweight footwear suitable for in and around the house and to drive in, were getting a bit scruffy, and besides, the soles were so thin that treading on stones was literally a pain. So it was time to look about for a replacement. It did not matter too much what they looked like, provided they were not too heavy, not too dear, but comfortable. I wanted slip-ons just for the convenience and who wants to be bothered tying laces.

I found these on Temu, the well known Chinese marketing website, and I paid just £8.02 for them. How bad can they be? I have to say that the ordering process was easy enough, far better than with their hated rival, AliExpress, with sizing clearly explained, free shipping (as part of a larger order) and very detailed tracking information throughout the 10 day delivery window.

When they arrived, presented in just a plain plastic bag, they were pretty much as I expected: ugly and rather crudely made. On closer examination, things got better. The build quality was not bad: all the seams and stitching seemed secure and well executed, the soles were thick and protective without being too heavy, and the uppers, although rather ugly, again seemed pretty well made. On balance, the shoes seemed rather ugly and distinctly dated but not badly made.

Following advice on the TEMU website, I ordered a size larger than I normally would, and these fitted perfectly. On my feet, the shoes felt lightweight and comfortable. There was no nipping or pinching when walking, and it was a quick and easy task to slip them on and off.

I have worn them daily for a couple of weeks now, off and on, and no problems so far. The seams are still intact and with no sign of the soles parting company from the uppers. The soles, I must say, are good and thick and although this does not add to the look of the shoes, it does mean that pebbles and stony surfaces no longer hold and terrors for me.

So far at least, £8.02, well spent.
