PEG Tube Complications in ICU: What You Need to Know and Safer Alternatives
PEG tube complications in ICU explained: safer alternatives, dialysis support, and how families can make the best decisions for their loved ones.
In this video, I respond to a question from Heather, whose daughter suffered a serious PEG tube complication in ICU. The PEG tube became dislodged, caused an abscess, and required urgent surgery to repair a stomach rupture. Now, her daughter’s kidneys are failing, and the ICU team has recommended dialysis.
I explain why PEG tube complications are not uncommon in intensive care, how they can lead to infections, abscesses, and even stomach perforations, and why dialysis is often needed after such complications. I also share safer alternatives such as nasogastric tubes, why they are often a better option in the early stages of critical illness, and how families can advocate for their loved ones.
You’ll discover:
Why dialysis can be life-saving and act as a bridge to recovery.
The importance of asking the ICU team about short-term vs. long-term dialysis plans.
What markers (urine output, creatinine, electrolytes, etc.) to monitor.
Why PEG tubes and tracheostomies should not be rushed into too early.
How to make sure your loved one gets the best possible care and treatment in ICU.
