On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, intentionally crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, causing their collapse, and a third into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. Passengers fought back on the fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, causing it to crash in a field in Pennsylvania. The coordinated attacks killed 2,977 people, including the 19 hijackers, marking the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil.
