March 6, 2021 Video Credit #Grid88 - Diego Garcia was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century, and its name is believed to have originated either from a ship's captain or a navigator of an early explorer. Following the Treaty of Paris of 1814, many of the islands in the Indian Ocean under French control were ceded to Great Britain, including Mauritius and the Chagos Islands. In 1965, these islands became the British Indian Ocean Territory. In the 19th century, the islands were used as plantations to produce copra and coconut oil. The plantations on Diego Garcia were closed in 1971 following the decision to establish the US Navy Support Facility based on the 1966 Exchange of Notes between Great Britain and the United States. In January 1971, US Navy Seabees were transported to the island by landing craft to begin establishing the US military presence on Diego Garcia. Today, Diego Garcia is home to 15 different commands, including the US Navy Support Facility, which serves as the host command.
Its position is strategically important to the US, allowing it to project its military power northwestward into the Middle East and South Asia, eastward into Asia, or westward into Africa. It is the most important US base in the Indian Ocean region. Diego Garcia is surrounded by approximately 60 other atolls. Its coastline forms a deep natural harbor, making it the perfect location for a naval base. Diego Garcia has been the scene of important US military operations. A secret, strategically important US military base is located on the remote tropical island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The site previously demonstrated its strategic importance to US military operations in the Middle East as a base for air strikes in 1991 during the first Gulf War. In 2001, B52 long-range bombers launched missions into Afghanistan from the base, targeting Taliban and al-Qaeda positions in the country's mountains. The base is also vital as a refueling point for the US Navy and Air Force. Its deep harbor accommodates aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and other vessels. Because Diego Garcia is accessible only to restricted US military personnel, its secrecy has attracted speculation. Unlike at the US military base in Guam, spouses of personnel are not allowed on Diego Garcia. No journalist has visited. The UN court ruled that it was illegal for the British to demand ownership of the islands as a condition of independence. Shortly thereafter, the British leased Diego Garcia to the US. The UN has now served the British with an eviction notice. Although the ruling is unenforceable, it exerts moral pressure and calls into question the future of the base. The base served as a launching pad for US military operations in the Middle East and a refueling point for Air Force patrols heading to the South China Sea, and was even designated by NASA as an emergency landing site for space missions.
