Why Lasting Change Doesn’t Come From Fear

People change for two reasons: inspiration or desperation.

Inspiration sparks an internal shift—I want to be better, I want to grow, I want to change because I see a vision of what’s possible. That kind of change takes root, because it’s chosen.

Desperation, on the other hand, is fear-driven. If I don’t change, I’ll lose the relationship. I’ll lose everything. And while fear might create short-term movement, it rarely lasts. Because once the fear is gone, so is the motivation.

If you want transformation that sticks—in your life and in your marriage—it won’t come from panic. It comes from vision. From inspiration. From choosing to grow because you want more, not because you’re afraid of less.

That’s the kind of work we do in Marriage in Bloom, my six-month marriage intensive designed to help couples move past fear, find clarity, and rebuild their marriage on inspiration, not desperation.
