Herbert West - Re Animator was written between October 1921 and June 1922. It was first serialised between February and July 1922 in the publication 'Home Brew'.

The narrator explains how he met Herbert West, when they were both young men studying at Miskatonic University medical school. The narrator became fascinated by West's theories, which postulated that the human body is simply a complex, organic machine which could be "restarted." West initially tries to prove this hypothesis, but is unsuccessful in his early attempts . Herbert then realises, that he must experiment on dead human subjects.

Although presented here as one tale, it is actually a series of six linked stories.
