REVOLUTION IN 'NEPAL' ON THE GROUND VIDEO OF ROIT IN 'KATHMANDU' 'NEPAL' REVOLUTION
REVOLUTION IN 'NEPAL' "INSIDE THE ROIT" IN 'KATHMANDU'
Widespread riots and protests, driven largely by Nepal's youth (Generation Z), broke out in September 2025 following a government ban on several social media platforms. The protests escalated due to police violence and broader discontent over government corruption and inequality, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli.
Key events of the riots
Social media ban: The government announced a ban on major social media sites, including Facebook, YouTube, and X, on September 4, 2025, after the companies failed to register with the government. The ban was the primary catalyst for the initial protests.
Trigger for protests: The ban immediately sparked anger among young Nepalis, who used these platforms for communication and organizing. Many were already frustrated by allegations of systemic corruption and nepotism among the political elite, whose children were perceived as enjoying lavish lifestyles in stark contrast to the struggles of ordinary youth.
Escalating violence: On September 8, 2025, tens of thousands of young protesters in Kathmandu marched toward Parliament. Clashes erupted when some protesters broke through barricades, leading police to use tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition.
Casualties: The violence resulted in at least 19 deaths and over 100 injuries across the country. Human Rights Watch has condemned the police's lethal response and called for an impartial investigation.
Political fallout: In the face of intensifying violence and public outrage:
Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, 2025.
Several ministers also resigned, citing moral responsibility for the events.
The government lifted the social media ban.
Protests continue: Despite the resignations and the end of the social media ban, protests continued, with some demonstrators calling for broader systemic change, including the dissolution of Parliament and new elections. Protesters also torched the parliament building and homes of prominent politicians.
I cannot believe what I saw today. Gen Z protests in Nepal and how they unfolded from my lense.
The full journey back from Thailand to the UK on 2 wheels continues soon once I am able to get out of curfew here and fly the bike. It seems it might be a while until that happens. Love you all
