Deuteronomy 17

This chapter covers idolatry, how order and peace was maintained, how kings should act.

It wasn't just about false gods trying to claim the authority of YHWH, creator of the universe, it was what these false gods had people do to worship them. Sacrificing children, illicit sex and orgies, none of these things were what God wanted for people.

God knew they'd want a king, and why, and came up with some simple 'rules' for how a king should act. Don't take a lot from the people you're supposed to be serving. Don't trade your people for stuff, don't have lots of wives who will lead you astray (*cough* Solomon *cough*), don't worry about acquiring stuff, but read the Law and follow it and use it as a guide to lead your people.
