William Wilberforce Tells His Story of the Fighting Slave Trade through English Parliament

I was born in 1759 in Hull, England, into a wealthy merchant family. As a young man, I loved conversation, politics, and the finer things in life, and at twenty-one I entered Parliament alongside my friend William Pitt, who became Prime Minister. At first, politics was more about charm than change for me—until a personal awakening shifted my focus. I began to ask how I could use my position to serve others. Friends told me about the horrors of the slave trade, and I was determined to end it. The fight was long and exhausting—over twenty years of speeches, bills, and defeats. Powerful people resisted change, but I refused to give up. In 1807, Parliament finally passed the Slave Trade Act, banning the trade across the British Empire. I continued to fight for full emancipation, and though I died in 1833, just days before it became law, I knew the battle was won. My life taught me that even against great odds, persistence and moral conviction can change the world.
