Nintendo Files a Patent for Simple Pokémon Game Mechanics to Stop Competition

Nintendo has filed a patent for a game mechanic common in their Pokémon series that comes amidst the company’s lawsuit against Palworld.

The main issue with the lawsuit are allegations that Palworld has ripped off game mechanics from the Pokémon games. This new patent filed by Nintendo is similar to the game mechanic that Pocketpair previously used in Palworld. While the patent may be specific to Pokémon right now, it’s broad language could be interpreted to prevent other forms of character summoning in other games. Not only that, but if patents are allowed to restrict basic games mechanics for anyone except the patent holder then this would create an arms race with ever game studios racing to undercut their competition through government backing.
