In 1955, America stood as a nation committed to addressing mental illness, with 558,922 psychiatric beds available in institutions nationwide, offering a sanctuary for those battling severe mental disorders. Fast forward to today, and that number has plummeted to a mere 38,922 beds, a staggering 93% reduction. Meanwhile, 15.4 million adults grapple with serious mental illness (SMI), with 33.8% of young adults aged 18–25 and females hit hardest, and 1 in 5 teens wrestling with debilitating conditions. Mental illness rates are higher among those below the poverty line at 29.0%. The deinstitutionalization movement, once hailed as progressive, has left an Ascendancy, a dangerous gaping void in care, and overwhelmed an American society unprepared for the fallout.
