Portal is a perfect contender in the
Museum of Illusions. Released on October
10th, 2007, for the PC and Xbox 360, and
later, the PS3 in December of that year.
Portal has been thought by many as
thought-provoking, highly original and one
of the greatest games of all time.
In this video, I will explain why this game
should be played in the Museum of
Illusions. (Watch Video for More Infomation)
First, let me briefly explain the history of this
museum.
The Museum of Illusions is a set of
museums first found in 2015 in Zagreb
Croatia, with the goal of providing a “visual,
sensory, and educational” experience to
expand people’s intellect, shifting
perspectives.
The Hegemony of Play notes the distinct
nature of video games in that
“Videogames on the other hand both
dictate and enforce
rules automatically through software. They
also determine
which play styles shall be favored and
which skill sets shall
be valued, and create the unusual situation
of a human
matching his or her wits with a machine.”
Portal and its successor fit perfectly as you
are by yourself in a closed environment and must use portals experiment with the laws
of physics to go through puzzles.
This aligns with the Museum of Illusions’
goal of demonstrating alterations of reality.
Portal uses a wide array of visual and
spatial trickery to make the player question
reality.
In terms of the video games’ cultural
impact, Portal is groundbreaking for its
town with its simplistic graphics, advanced
physics, mind bending puzzles, and fresh
mechanics that still hold up to this day.
