Meanwhile, 15.4 million adults grapple with serious mental illness (SMI), with 33.8% of young adults aged 18–25 and females hit hardest, and 1 in 5 teens wrestling with debilitating conditions. Mental illness rates are higher among those below the poverty line at 29.0%. The deinstitutionalization movement, once hailed as progressive, has left an Ascendancy, a dangerous gaping void in care, and overwhelmed an American society unprepared for the fallout.
