Russian drones breach Polish airspace
On the night of September 9th to the early morning of September 10th, 2025, Polish airspace was violated 19 times by Russian-made drones, many of them launched from Belarus. The assessment of the Polish Air Force and NATO was that this was not a trajectory error but a deliberate action. The Polish Air Force, supported by allies from the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany, managed to shoot down at least eight of these drones using F-16 and F-35 fighter jets as well as Patriot defense systems. Some crashed in residential areas such as Wyryki-Wola, causing property damage, but fortunately no casualties were reported, as Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized, describing the incident as an unprecedented provocation and the most serious threat to Polish security since World War II.
Although NATO is not at war, the attack demonstrated that Russian aggression extends beyond Ukraine. From the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, immediate steps were taken: a representative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation was summoned and handed a note of protest, while direct communication was maintained with international leaders such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, High Representative Kaya Kalas, and OSCE Acting Chair Elina Valtonen. Poland thanked its allies for their expressions of solidarity and their willingness to back them with concrete actions.
As an official response, Poland invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides for joint consultations among allies whenever any of them considers its territorial integrity, political independence, or security to be threatened. Warsaw insisted that these provocations demonstrate the need to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. Russia, meanwhile, denied all responsibility and claimed there was no evidence these were Russian drones, even suggesting a Ukrainian provocation, which Poland dismissed as a predictable lie and a relic of Soviet-style rhetoric. The Kremlin also once again mocked President Trump’s peace efforts.
The Polish government called on the public and the international community to rely only on official sources and verified media, warning that anyone claiming this was a Ukrainian provocation is spreading Russian propaganda. In parallel, the European Union, NATO, and several European allies expressed their condemnation and support for Poland, while evaluating additional sanctions and a strengthening of collective defenses. Warsaw made it clear that neither Poland, nor the European Union, nor NATO will be intimidated, and they will continue to support the Ukrainian people. For Poland’s leadership, the time has come for Russia to understand that any attempt to rebuild Europe’s last empire is doomed to failure.
