This documentary uncovers the hidden history of Hollywood, revealing how the modern American Dream was invented by a small group of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Fleeing the violent pogroms and crushing poverty of the shtetl, men like Harry Warner, Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, and Adolph Zukor came to America with nothing and built an empire.

Shut out of respectable professions by the Protestant elite, these future moguls found an opportunity in the fledgling, low-brow movie business. They escaped the control of Thomas Edison's trust by moving west to California, where they created their own "Golden Shtetls"—the studio system.

From this new seat of power, they created a "shadow America" on screen—a mythical world of strong families, boundless optimism, and happy endings that reflected their own aspirations. This vision, fueled by a complex cultural exchange between Jewish and Black artists, ultimately came to define American values for generations.

Their success, however, was shadowed by a deep-seated fear. They assimilated aggressively, changing their names and hiding their heritage, a conflict that culminated in their capitulation to the anti-Semitic undercurrents of the HUAC hearings and the Hollywood Blacklist. This is the story of how a group of outsiders created the ultimate insider's fantasy, an ideology so powerful it became a global religion: Hollywoodism.
