Bodycam show fatal 2023 police shooting in Miami-Dade after carjacking and chase

Miami-Dade, FL - New videos showt the moments leading up to and after a 2023 carjacking incident that led to a police-involved shooting in Miami-Dade that left a suspect dead.

The body camera footage and surveillance video released Tuesday capture the moments the car was pulled over and a Miami-Dade Police officer opened fire on Sept. 25, 2023.

Miami-Dade Police officials said the incident began as an investigation into a carjacking in the City of Miami.

The Nissan Versa was later spotted by Miami-Dade detectives, but when they tried to stop it, it drove off as someone inside shot at officers, officials said.

The new footage shows Det. Kenson Dordor, who was involved in the pursuit, stop the car in the area of Northwest 23rd Street and 12th Avenue.

Dordor is seen immediately getting out of his car and telling the front passenger, Nicolas Avila Herrera, to show his hands.

At the same time that Avila Herrera tries exiting the Nissan, Dordor shoots once, hitting Avila Herrera in the chest.

Another officer's body camera captured the blood and chaos inside the Nissan, and the officer is seen taking away the 9mm pistol that was in Avila Herrera's hand.

A few seconds later, the officer returns to the car as the driver and a third person who was inside are taken into custody.

Moments later, officers are seen trying to keep Avila Herrera alive, but he was taken to a local hopital where he was pronounced dead.

Inside the Nissan, investigators said they found a spent 9mm cartridge and two small glass crack cocaine pipes.

The driver and passenger were arrested.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office closed the case last month, on Aug. 25, deciding not to charge Dordor in the shooting.

In a memo, prosecutors said the videos don't paint a clear picture as to whether Dordor's perspective during the shooting was obstructed, and since Dordor didn't provide a statement, his thinking during the shooting couldn't be determined.
